A C-section birth doesn't have to be cold or scary.
You don't have to have a VBAC to experience a healing or redemptive birth.
A C-section can be just as beautiful, empowering, and healing as a VBAC.
Every family's story is different. Every first C-section happened for a different reason. Every parent brings their own hopes, fears, and experiences into the birth of their next baby.
When families are faced with the decision between planning a repeat Cesarean or pursuing a VBAC, I believe they deserve more than opinions. They deserve evidence-based information, compassionate support, and the opportunity to make an informed decision that feels right for their family.
That's exactly what this family experienced.
They were given evidence. They were given a choice. Most importantly, they were in the driver's seat for the birth of their second baby.
I may not have been there when their first sweet little one entered the world, but I can tell you this birth was full of love, joy, and intention.
When I arrived in pre-op, I didn't walk into a cold medical space. I walked into a room filled with laughter, excitement, and family. If you had been standing outside the room, you probably never would have guessed we were only a short time away from heading into the operating room.
Mom and Dad were surrounded by love. Big sister was there, along with Grandma, Grandpa, and two aunties, all eagerly waiting to welcome the newest member of their family. As it came time to head back, each person had the chance to hug Mom, encourage her, and send her off with love.
A little later, Dad and I joined her in the operating room.
The lights were dimmed. Mom had her support people by her side. We witnessed their baby enter the world. They were able to have delayed cord clamping, soak in those first precious moments, and begin their story together as a family of four.
This is what family-centered Cesarean birth can look like.
Birth isn't defined by the way a baby enters the world. It's defined by the love, respect, support, and informed choices that surround it.
Every family deserves that
